Wrong Name, Address, Phone Online: How Bad Citations Hurt Local SEO in Pakistan

CortVista Team2026-09-2510 min read

Your shop moved two years ago, but Facebook still shows the old address. An old directory lists a mobile number nobody answers. Google Maps spells your name one way and the website another. Customers call a dead number, and Google is not sure which version of your business is real.

This is a NAP problem, short for Name, Address, Phone. In local SEO, every place your business details appear online is called a citation. When those citations disagree, local rankings suffer and customers get lost.

Why NAP Consistency Matters

Google tries to confirm that a business is real and located where it says it is. It compares your Google Business Profile with your website, social profiles, directories, and other mentions. When most sources agree, Google is more confident showing you in Maps and local results. When they conflict, that confidence drops.

The customer impact is even more direct. A wrong phone number means a lost call. A wrong address means a lost visit and possibly a bad review.

Common NAP Problems in Pakistan

- **Name variations**: "Al-Noor Traders," "Alnoor Trader," "Al Noor Traders Pvt Ltd," plus an Urdu version. - **Address formats**: "Peoples Colony No. 1," "People's Colony," "near Chenab Club," or missing shop and street numbers. - **Old phone numbers**: a previous owner's mobile, a disconnected PTCL landline, or a former employee's personal number. - **Moved locations**: old listings never updated after relocation. - **Duplicate listings**: two Google profiles for one shop, created by different staff or an old agency. - **Different numbers per platform**: a WhatsApp number on Instagram, a landline on the website, and another mobile on Google.

Step 1: Pick One Official Version

Decide exactly how your details should be written:

- **Name**: the name on your shop board and registration, without extra keywords. - **Address**: one format with shop or house number, street, area, city, and province, written identically everywhere. - **Phone**: one main number that is always answered. If WhatsApp uses a different number, label it clearly as WhatsApp.

Write this in a short document and share it with everyone who manages your online presence.

Step 2: Audit Where You Appear

Search Google for each of these and note every result:

- Your business name - Your old and current phone numbers - Your old and current addresses - Your name plus your city

Check at least Google Business Profile, your website (footer, contact page, and structured data), Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Apple Maps, Bing Places, and any Pakistani directories or industry listings. Record everything in a spreadsheet with columns for platform, URL, name shown, address shown, phone shown, and status.

Step 3: Fix the Most Important Sources First

Work in this order:

1. Google Business Profile 2. Your own website, including footer, contact page, and structured data 3. Facebook and Instagram 4. Apple Maps and Bing Places 5. Major directories and industry sites 6. Smaller or older listings

Most platforms let you edit a listing you own. For listings you do not control, use "suggest an edit" or the platform's contact form, and keep proof such as a utility bill or business registration ready.

Step 4: Remove or Merge Duplicates

Duplicate Google profiles split your reviews and confuse ranking. Report a duplicate from inside your verified profile, or request removal if it sits at an old address you no longer use. On Facebook, merge duplicate pages where possible.

Step 5: Update Your Website Structured Data

Your website should include LocalBusiness or Organization structured data with the same name, address, phone, and opening hours. This tells search engines directly which details are official. Make sure the address in the structured data matches the visible footer exactly.

Step 6: Add a Few Quality Citations

Once your details are consistent, a handful of relevant, trustworthy listings helps more than hundreds of low-quality directory submissions. Focus on:

- Major map platforms - Industry associations or chambers of commerce - Well-known local directories that real customers use - Supplier or partner websites that can list you

Avoid paid "500 directory submissions" packages. They often create more inconsistent, spammy listings that you later have to clean up.

Step 7: Keep It Maintained

Check your main listings every three months. Whenever you move, change numbers, or rename the business, update the official document first, then every platform in the same week.

How Long Until It Helps?

Fixing the major sources can improve local visibility within a few weeks as Google recrawls them, while smaller directories take longer. The customer benefit, fewer wrong calls and wasted trips, starts the day you fix the listing people actually use.

Clean NAP data is one of the least exciting parts of local SEO, but everything else builds on it. If your business has moved, rebranded, or been managed by several people over the years, a citation cleanup is often one of the fastest ways to steady your local rankings.
